La Cartuja de Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes
Founded outside of Sariñena by Cartesian monks at the beginning of the 16th century, a new monastery was built in the 1800’s.
The landmark is of historic and cultural value with more than 2000 sq. meters of murals painted by Friar Manuel Bayeu, who dedicated almost all of this life to them.
El Monasterio de Sigena
The monastery was founded in 1188 as a convent by the expressed desire of Doña Sancha de Castilla, the wife of Alfonso II of Aragon, who upon his death was buried within its walls.
In the Royal Pantheon you can also find the tomb of Pedro II of Aragon, a sign of the importance that the monastery had in its day when it was one of the richest in Aragon.
It has a Romanesque portal with fourteen archivolts and has been a national monument since 1923.
The Orwell Route
As he explained in his book Homage to Catalonia, the write George Orwell fought for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War.
In January of 1937, he was stationed at Monte Irazo at the Summit of the Sierra Alcubierre, between the town of Alcubierre and Leciñena.
There are restored trenches with detailed explanations on both sides of the front, in this case, the highway.
The Birthplace of Miguel Servet
Villanueva de Sigena is the birthplace of Miguel Servet, an invaluable thinker of the 16th century that left his mark on the fields of astronomy, theology, physics and anatomy, among others.
The house is home a science museum and the library of the Michael Servetus Institute.
